El pueblo en invierno

En agosto el pueblo tiene ochenta habitantes. En enero tiene once. La diferencia no está en la gente que se va, sino en la que vuelve: casi todos los que aparecen en verano nacieron allí.
La panadería abre tres días a la semana y el bar solo por la tarde. Cuando cerró la escuela, hace veinte años, los últimos niños bajaron a estudiar al pueblo grande, a cuarenta minutos por una carretera que en invierno se hiela.
Don Julio tiene ochenta y seis años y es el único que no se ha ido nunca. Dice que en invierno se oye todo: el viento, el agua de la fuente y, algunas noches, un coche que pasa y que él reconoce por el ruido del motor.
El ayuntamiento del pueblo grande arregló la carretera el año pasado y puso una parada de autobús. Pasa uno los martes. Don Julio no lo coge, pero le gusta saber que está.
En agosto vuelven los ochenta y el bar abre todo el día. Don Julio dice que le gusta y que también le cansa. En septiembre, cuando se van, tarda una semana en acostumbrarse otra vez al silencio.
