The hotel and where you sleep

La tienda is the shop, and la tienda de campaña is the tent — one word for both, and the join between them is older than either. Tender is to stretch something out, and that is what both of them once were: a cloth stretched over poles, the stall the trader put up in the square in the morning and the shelter the soldier put up in the field. English took its two words from two different places and kept none of that. So de campaña is not decoration but the whole of the difference: the same stretched cloth, out in open country instead of in the market.
