Parties and celebrations in Spanish

Inviting, congratulating, raising a glass.

Pasarlo bien carries a lo that stands for nothing in particular — not the party, not the evening, just « it », the whole of how things went. Spanish has that neuter pronoun and English does not, so English has to name something instead: to have a good time. Once you have noticed it, the same lo is everywhere: pasarlo mal, arreglárselas, tomárselo bien, dejarlo estar. None of them comes apart, and the pronoun cannot be swapped for a noun — asking what the lo refers to is the one question with no answer. Parts of the Americas say pasarla bien, which changes the vowel and nothing else.
