Talking about your own family is the first conversation that goes beyond hello. English has a separate word for each group — « parents », « siblings », « grandparents » — and each of them says exactly who is meant. Spanish has none of those words and puts the masculine plural to work instead: los padres is « the parents » and not « the fathers », and los hermanos is « the brothers » or « the brothers and sisters », with nothing in the phrase to decide which. The precision English gets for free has to come from the situation here.
