Food and drink in Spanish

From breakfast to the bill.

Eating is an early topic of conversation in Spain and a late appointment: lunch between two and three, dinner from nine onwards. Ordering takes very little — a word for what you want, por favor, and la cuenta at the end. The one thing to rebuild is how hunger is said. English treats it as a state of the person and uses « to be » with an adjective: « I am hungry ». Spanish treats it as something you have, with a noun: tengo hambre. The same goes for thirst, for cold and for being right — tengo sed, tengo frío, tengo razón.
