What holds these lists together

Everything you say about yourself and your own home: who is in the family, what is in the flat, what you wear — and how a flat is found, rented, furnished and left again. The family words hold a surprise straight away. Mis padres are my parents, not my fathers, and mis hermanos may be brothers only or brothers and sisters together, because the masculine plural covers a mixed group. The housing words split the Spanish-speaking world much as «flat» and «apartment» split English. El piso is a flat in Madrid and a floor in Buenos Aires, where anyone looking for somewhere to live looks for a departamento.
