Gardening in Spanish

Soil, propagation, pruning, watering — what a garden needs and when it needs it.

El chupón is the sucker, the shoot that runs straight up out of a trunk and never fruits, and both languages named it from the same suspicion: that it sucks the strength out of everything else. Spanish builds it on chupar, to suck, and the word does other work — in much of Latin America el chupón is a baby's dummy, and in Spain un chupetón is a love bite. English took the second step elsewhere: a « sucker » is also somebody easily taken in, the one something is drawn out of.
