Cutting, colour, perming, care — what is discussed at the chair and mixed in the back room.
La mecha is a highlighted strand of hair, and it is the same word as the wick of a candle and the fuse of a firework. The picture is a twist of fibres soaked in something, which is exactly what a strand in foil is. From the fuse comes an idiom worth having: encender la mecha is to light the fuse, to set something off. English keeps wick, fuse and highlight far apart, and no hairdresser in English is holding a fuse.
