The car and the garage
Filling up, parking, breaking down — and describing the noise.
La matrícula is the number plate on a car and the enrolment at a university, and the two are one idea: being entered on a register. Matricularse is to enrol — in a course, in a school — and la matrícula is also the fee paid to do it. The car keeps the older sense: the vehicle is on the register and carries its entry on the back. So somebody who says ya he pagado la matrícula is talking about a term at university, and somebody who says apunta la matrícula is looking at a car.
