Appointments and arrangements in Spanish

Fixing a time, moving it, and the telephone in between.

English moves an appointment with a verb and a particle — put it off, bring it forward, call it off — and the particle carries the meaning. Spanish has a separate verb for each: aplazaris to move it lateradelantarto move it earliercancelarto drop it altogether Because the direction sits inside the verb, nothing has to follow it, and lo hemos adelantado is a whole sentence on its own. Adelantar has a second life on the road, where it means to overtake — there too it is the idea of getting in front.
