What holds these lists together

What people do all day, and the words used to talk and write about it — from the application through the payslip to the negotiating table. A job is stated with ser and without an article: soy profesora, where English cannot do without its «a». That is no detail; it is the answer to the second question anybody asks you. The correspondence draws a line English leaves blurred. English opens a business letter and a note to a friend with the same «Dear»; Spanish writes Estimada señora to a stranger and keeps Querida for people it knows. The appointment words sit alongside, because tener una cita and quedar con alguien are not the same arrangement.
