El ama de llaves is the housekeeper, and the two languages name the same person from different objects. English builds the word on the house; Spanish builds it on the keys, which is what the job actually was — the one trusted with the cupboards, the linen and the store. The same ama heads a small family of jobs: el ama de casa is the woman who runs a household, el ama de cría was the wet nurse. Nothing in ama says which; what she has charge of is always named after it.
