Declaration, tariff heading, origin, release — how a consignment gets across a border.
El levante de la mercancía is the release: the moment customs lets a consignment go. The word is levantar, to lift — the barrier goes up — and the same root gives Spanish something English keeps well away from any office. El levante is the east, where the sun lifts itself: the Levant, and in Spain the Mediterranean coast and the warm easterly that blows along it. One word for a customs release, a wind and a coastline, where English has « release », « the Levant » and « the easterly », with nothing in common between them.
