Seafaring in Spanish

Hull, draught, chart, coming alongside — what is said on board and in port.

La derrota prevista is the intended track, the line drawn on the chart before leaving, and la derrota is a word nobody mixes up twice. Everywhere else in Spanish it is defeat: la derrota electoral, sufrir una derrota. The two come from different places — the sea sense from el derrotero, the way one is routed, the other from breaking, an army broken and scattered — and they arrived at the same seven letters. Only the chart tells you which one is meant.
