What holds these lists together

From the ticket office to the engineering of the vehicle, and what holds these lists together is something no dictionary records: most of it is read rather than heard — on a departures board, a sign, a booking confirmation. Spanish also sets a trap on the very first journey. In Spain coger el autobús is as harmless as catching a bus in English; in Mexico or Argentina coger is a vulgar word, and the bus is taken with tomar. The bus itself changes its name there too, often el camión in Mexico and el colectivo in Buenos Aires. Tomar is understood everywhere.
