Learning to drive in Spanish

Theory lesson, manoeuvres, right of way, points — what is learned and tested in Spain.

La multa de tráfico is the fine, and here it is English rather than Spanish that plays the trick. « Fine » is a penalty in money, and « fine » is also good, delicate, thin and acceptable — « that's fine », « a fine day », « a fine layer ». The two arrived at the same spelling from the same Latin finis, the end: what settles a matter, and what is finished off, refined. Spanish keeps them apart, la multa for the penalty and fino or bien for the rest, so the joke about a fine that is fine cannot be made in Spanish at all.
