Errado The ground was wet. It rained all night.
Certo The ground was wet. It had been raining all night.
Esta forma raramente se constrói mal e muitas vezes nem se chega a usar, porque em português um simples «tinha chovido» já parece bastar. O sinal prático é o mesmo do presente: onde o português puser um «havia … que» ou um «há» com o imperfeito, o inglês pede quase sempre had been mais -ing.
