Building Works on the Fourth Floor
Dans le chat de l’immeuble, on parle de travaux — et de la quantité de bruit qu’on peut raisonnablement supporter.
Un chat entre voisins. Observe les degrés de politesse et d’ironie — et la façon dont le conflit est désamorcé à la fin.
Good morning, everyone. Just a heads-up: the building company starts in our flat on Monday. They will be knocking down a wall, so there will be some noise for about two weeks. Apologies in advance.
Thanks for letting us know. When you say some noise, are we talking about a drill now and then, or the kind of noise that makes working from home impossible?
To be honest, the first three days will be the worst. After that it should mostly be painting and some work on the electricity.
I have a baby who sleeps between one and three in the afternoon. Is there any chance the loudest work could avoid those hours? I realise it is a big ask.
Not a big ask at all. I will talk to the company today. They usually take their lunch break around then anyway.
In that case, could the drilling also stop by six? I have calls with clients in another time zone in the evenings.
They finish at five, so that should not be a problem. And if anything does get out of hand, just message me directly rather than banging on the ceiling.
Speaking as the person who lives directly below you: I accept your apology and request one bottle of wine per week of drilling.
Deal. Two bottles, since it is two weeks. And when it is all finished, you are all invited for a drink to see what the noise was for.
That is very kind. Thank you for asking first. It makes a real difference.
Good morning, everyone. The company starts work in our flat on Monday. They will take down a wall, so it will be loud for about two weeks. I am sorry about that.
Thanks for telling us. How loud? A drill now and then, or so loud that nobody can work from home?

Of course. I will talk to the company today. They usually have lunch then anyway.
And could the drilling stop by six? I have calls with clients in the evenings.
They finish at five, so that is no problem. If it is too much, just send me a message.
I live directly below you. I accept your apology, but I want one bottle of wine per week.
