The Reference
Ein Arbeitszeugnis, in dem jedes Wort stimmt und der Eindruck nicht.
Ein Text darüber, wie eine Sprache etwas sagen kann, ohne es zu sagen. Sprachlich lohnt hier der Blick auf die Passivformen: was described, had been written, is meant to be read. Wer nicht nennen will, wer etwas getan hat, greift zum Passiv — auf Englisch wie auf Deutsch.
The reference was two paragraphs long and contained nothing that was not true. Ilse read it three times in the car before she drove home.
She had worked in the department for six years. In the reference this was described as a period during which she had "carried out her tasks to our satisfaction". Every word of that was correct.
What the reference did not contain was the word "always". It did not contain "full" either, and it did not mention the two projects she had led. It ended with thanks and best wishes for the future.
A reference of this kind is meant to be read twice: once for what stands there, and once for what a reader of such documents expects to find and does not. The second reading is the one that counts, and it is not written down anywhere.
On Monday she asked for a meeting. She did not complain and she did not use the word "unfair". She brought a second sheet of paper with the two projects on it, with dates and figures, and put it on the table.
The new reference arrived eleven days later. It was three paragraphs long. The word "always" appeared twice, and the projects had names.
