として: in the role of
として, としては, としても
A noun plus として says in what role, capacity or status something is done or seen.
Noun + として names a role or capacity: 通訳として働く, "work as an interpreter", 倉庫として使う, "use as a storeroom". It answers the question "in what function?" and nothing else.
It changes shape with what follows. Before a noun it is としての: 親としての責任, "responsibility as a parent". With は it becomes としては, which either contrasts a role ("as a company, we…") or judges something against what is normal for its category: 初心者としては上手だ, "for a beginner, he is good". With も: としても, "also as".
English "as" does far more work than として. "As it was raining" is a reason (から, ので); "as I was walking" is a time (とき, ながら); "as you said" is a manner (ように); "as a child" is a period of life (子どもの頃). None of these is として.
The commonest slip is the last one. 子どもとして means "in the role of a child" — playing the child in a play, perhaps — and not "when I was a child". If the English "as" could be replaced by "in the capacity of", として is right; otherwise it almost certainly is not.

Set phrases with として
A handful of fixed expressions built on として are worth learning whole, because they are common in announcements, news and meetings. 原則として is "as a rule", 全体として "on the whole", 結果として "as a result", and 例として "as an example".
In each of them として still means "taken as": taken as a rule, taken as a whole, taken as a result. Seeing the role meaning inside the set phrase makes it easier to build new ones of the same kind, such as 記念として, "as a memento".
Exceptions and special cases (1)
-
としても follows a verb or a whole clause
it usually means "even supposing", not "also as".
今から出たとしても、間に合わないだろう。Even if we left now, we probably would not make it.
Here と + する means "take it that …", so としても is "even if we take it that …" — a concession, not a role.

Watch out
"As a child" names a period of your life, not a role you played. Japanese says that with a time word: 子どもの頃 or 子どものとき. 子どもとして would mean acting in the capacity of a child.
Use として for a role you play, not for a time of life or a reason.
