からこそ: precisely because

the reason that matters most

Put a reason in the spotlight: this, and nothing else, is why.

こそ puts the spotlight on the word in front of it, and on から it lights up a reason: 好(す)きだからこそ厳(きび)しく言(い)う, "it is precisely because I care that I speak harshly". The phrase follows the plain form, and a noun or a na-adjective takes だ: 家族(かぞく)だからこそ, 大切(たいせつ)だからこそ.

It earns its place when the reason is surprising, or runs against the obvious reading. Harsh words usually mean dislike; with からこそ the speaker insists that they mean the opposite. The sentence often ends in のだ or んです, which marks it as an explanation: …からこそ、頑張(がんば)れたのだ.

Only から can take こそ; ので cannot. ので presents a reason as quiet background, and background cannot be put in the spotlight. At the start of a sentence, だからこそ points back at what has just been said: "and that is exactly why".

English speakers tend to use it as a strong "because". An ordinary cause — I was hungry, so I ate — needs no spotlight, and adding one makes the sentence sound as if it were answering an objection nobody raised.

The form

after a verb努力(どりょく)したからこそ
after an i-adjective難(むずか)しいからこそ
after a na-adjective大切(たいせつ)だからこそ
after a noun家族(かぞく)だからこそ
opening a sentenceだからこそ、…
with an explanation at the end…からこそ、…のだ

The rules one by one

  1. からこそ follows the plain form; a noun or a na-adjective takes だ.

友達(ともだち)だからこそ、本当(ほんとう)のことを言(い)うんです。It is because you are my friend that I am telling you the truth.

  2. Use it when the reason is unexpected or needs to be insisted on.

失敗(しっぱい)したからこそ、学(まな)べたこともある。There are things I learned precisely because I failed.

  3. こそ goes with から, never with ので.

忙(いそが)しいからこそ、休(やす)みが大切(たいせつ)だ。It is precisely when you are busy that rest matters.

  4. だからこそ at the start of a sentence means "that is exactly why".

時間(じかん)は限(かぎ)られている。だからこそ、計画(けいかく)が必要(ひつよう)なのだ。Time is limited. That is exactly why a plan is needed.

A closer look

The spotlight particle

こそ is not tied to reasons. After any noun it says "this one, and no other": 今年(ことし)こそ合格(ごうかく)したい, "this year I really want to pass" — after other years when you did not. からこそ is the same particle aimed at a reason.

Because こそ singles something out against expectations, it belongs to statements, not to background. That is the real reason ので rejects it: ので exists to make a reason sound obvious and uncontested, and a spotlight on something uncontested has nothing to show.

Worth knowing (1)
  • こちらこそ, the everyday こそ

The こそ every learner meets first is in こちらこそ, the reply to a thank-you or a greeting: "no, it is I who should say that". It is the same spotlight — this side, not yours — and it shows how naturally こそ turns an expectation round.

こちらこそ、よろしくお願(ねが)いします。Likewise — I look forward to working with you too.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

Both ので and から translate as "because", so it seems natural to put こそ on either. But ので presents a reason as neutral background, the opposite of what こそ does. Only から can be highlighted, and a na-adjective before it takes だ.

Wrong:好(す)きなのでこそ、厳(きび)しく言(い)うのです。
Right:好(す)きだからこそ、厳(きび)しく言(い)うのです。

こそ goes on から, never on ので — and only when the reason needs a spotlight.
