O «para» português leva a for, e é aí que está o erro. I went to the shop for buying milk está errado nas duas versões possíveis. O que é preciso é o infinitivo sozinho, ou in order to em estilo cuidado. for mais -ing existe, mas diz para que serve um objeto: This tool is for cutting metal.
