La trappola tipica

Sbagliato He said me that the meeting was cancelled.

Giusto He told me that the meeting was cancelled.

Il criterio è formale e non di significato: se subito dopo il verbo c'è un me, him o us, ci vuole tell. «Mi ha detto» è He told me, mai He said me. E al contrario He told that … non esiste: tell senza persona non si usa.
