Cuando el idioma decide quién habla

En una reunión en la lengua materna de la mitad de los presentes, la otra mitad habla menos. Eso es esperable. Lo que se nota menos es que no habla menos de todo por igual: deja de intervenir sobre todo cuando hay que matizar, dudar o discrepar.
La razón no es el vocabulario, sino el margen. Decir «no estoy de acuerdo» es fácil en cualquier idioma; decirlo sin sonar más duro de lo que uno pretende requiere un control fino que llega mucho después. Ante la duda se calla, y callar sale más barato que ofender.
El resultado es que las objeciones más matizadas de la sala son justo las que no se dicen, y que quien las tenía sale de allí pensando que ya las dirá por escrito. A veces las dice, y llega tarde; casi siempre las deja.
Quien dirige la reunión suele interpretar ese silencio como acuerdo, y no por descuido: no hay nada en la sala que indique otra cosa. La información no se pierde en la traducción, se pierde antes de que nadie la formule.
Los remedios conocidos son modestos y funcionan: preguntar por escrito antes, dar dos minutos de silencio para escribir, empezar la ronda por quien no juega en casa. Ninguno arregla el problema; todos suben algo el número de objeciones que llegan a decirse.
