Environmental policy in Spanish

Limits, conditions, transition periods — the environment as a bargain.

El lavado verde is « greenwashing » taken apart and rebuilt in Spanish rather than borrowed whole. The language does that often: la nubefor cloudel ratónfor mouseel correo basurafor junk mailla hoja de rutafor roadmap English words do get in — el marketing, el software — but a compound that can be translated usually is, and the translation then behaves like an ordinary phrase that can be bent and conjugated. It also keeps the metaphor visible: a Spanish reader sees the washing, where an English one long ago stopped seeing it.
