The education system in Spanish

What a Spanish school career is called, stage by stage.

Two words look like English and are not. El colegio is a school for children — primary, sometimes up to fourteen — and not a college of any kind; el instituto is where teenagers go, not a research institute. So voy al instituto is said by a fifteen-year-old and mi hijo empieza el colegio by the parent of a six-year-old. English makes this harder than most languages do, because « college » means one thing in Britain and another in America and neither of them is a colegio. A university department is la facultad, and a research institute is el centro de investigación.
