El mapa y el territorio
Every representation leaves something out — and that is exactly what makes it useful.
A text about simplification. Watch how it builds an idea in four steps and in the last paragraph does not sum up but moves the question elsewhere.
Un mapa con cada detalle del terreno tendría el tamaño del terreno y no serviría para nada. Lo que hace útil a un mapa es exactamente lo que deja fuera, y quien lo dibuja decide, antes que nada, qué merece la pena perder.
Lo mismo vale para cualquier resumen, cualquier norma y cualquier medida. Simplificar no es un defecto que se corrige con más datos: es la operación que hace posible usarlos. Un informe sin recortes no se lee, y uno que no se lee no informa.
El problema empieza cuando se olvida qué se dejó fuera. Un mapa de carreteras no miente al no marcar los ríos, pero quien planea un viaje en barco con él se equivocará, y la culpa no será del mapa sino de haberlo tomado por otra cosa.
De ahí que la pregunta importante ante cualquier resumen no sea si es exacto, sino para qué se hizo. Un dato correcto puede llevar a una decisión pésima si contesta a una pregunta que no era la que había que hacerse.
Y queda lo incómodo: quien elige qué dejar fuera casi nunca es quien después usa el mapa. Entre los dos hay una distancia que no se cierra con buena voluntad, porque ninguno de los dos ve el trabajo del otro.
