What holds these lists together

Food is where a learner produces language earliest and where the gap between recognising a word and using it shows fastest: reading a menu needs one kind of vocabulary, ordering from it needs another, and following a recipe needs a third made almost entirely of verbs. The lists here are arranged along that path, ending with the farm the ingredients came off.

For example: essen (to eat), die Zutat (ingredient), der Backofen (oven), die Gaststätte (restaurant, inn), das Brötchen kaufen (to buy rolls), der Wochenmarkt (weekly market)
