Brewing

German brewing has kept a technical vocabulary that turns up on ordinary bottle labels, which makes it worth learning even for someone who will never brew. Die Stammwürze is on almost every label and says how much was dissolved in the wort before fermentation started, not how strong the beer is. Obergärig and untergärig divide the whole German beer world in two, and they describe where the yeast sits rather than anything you can taste directly. And das Reinheitsgebot is a name a reader will meet constantly: a rule about which ingredients may go in.
