Two habits are worth knowing before the first meal out. The waiter will ask Zusammen oder getrennt? — together or separately — and splitting a bill down to individual dishes is entirely normal and causes nobody any trouble. And tipping works differently: you do not leave money on the table but name the total you want to pay as you hand the money over, rounding up by roughly five to ten per cent.
