Verbs of movement in German

Going, carrying, pushing and falling — and the prefixes that say in which direction.

Nearly every verb here takes sein in the perfect rather than haben, because it describes movement from one place to another: Ich bin gefallen, Er ist gesprungen. The exception is a verb with a direct object, which switches back: Ich habe den Ball geworfen. German also builds direction into the verb with prefixes — hinein-, hinaus-, hinauf-, vorbei- — so one stem covers what English needs a preposition for.
