Nutrition and food labelling

One word on this list looks English and is not: fade. It has two syllables and describes neither colours losing strength nor a passing fad, although English fade comes from the same French word; said of food, it means bland, flat, short of salt or seasoning — Die Soße schmeckt fade. That makes it a word of this subject rather than of the paint shop. When a manufacturer takes salt or fat out of a product, the complaint that follows is that it tastes fade, and the usual remedy is the next thing worth reading on the label: a Geschmacksverstärker, or yeast extract, which does much the same job and counts as an ingredient rather than an additive. The adjective declines like any other, ein fader Eintopf, and in the south and in Austria the short form fad more often means dull: Mir ist fad is simply I am bored.
