Food and ingredients in German

The rest of the shopping list — dairy, meat, fruit and the bread names that need explaining.

German bread deserves a note of its own. Das Brötchen is a roll and is called something different in nearly every region — Semmel, Schrippe, Weck — all meaning the same thing. And two dairy products have no clean English equivalent: der Quark is a fresh curd cheese used in both sweet and savoury cooking, and die Schlagsahne is whipping cream sold ready to whip.
