Weekly markets, deposit bottles and the Sunday closing that catches everybody out once.
Two things about shopping here are worth planning around. Shops are closed on Sundays and public holidays almost everywhere, with stations and petrol stations as the exception — so Saturday afternoon is when the supermarket is full. And most drink containers carry a deposit, das Pfand, which you get back by feeding the empties into a machine at the shop; the bottles stacked beside a bin are somebody’s deliberate gift.
