Lo que mide una nota

A number that says less than everyone thinks.

A text about measurement and its limits. It uses the subjunctive where something is judged rather than stated — and the indicative where a fact stands.

Una nota resume en un número el resultado de una prueba, y esa prueba mide lo que se pudo preguntar en el tiempo que había. Todo lo demás queda fuera, no por descuido, sino porque no cabía.

Eso sería inofensivo si la nota se leyera como lo que es. Sin embargo, se usa para comparar personas, y una comparación exige que lo medido sea lo mismo en los dos casos. Dos alumnos con un siete pueden haber fallado en cosas distintas y saber cosas distintas.

A esto se añade un efecto conocido: en cuanto una medida se convierte en objetivo, deja de medir lo que medía. Quien enseña para el examen enseña bien aquello que el examen pregunta, y lo hace de forma perfectamente razonable.

No se sigue de ahí que haya que dejar de poner notas. Una prueba imperfecta que se corrige igual para todos protege mejor que un juicio del profesor, y quien la critica sin proponer otra cosa suele estar defendiendo, sin saberlo, algo peor.

Lo que sí se sigue es más modesto: que el número se lea con lo que trae detrás, y que quien lo usa recuerde qué preguntas cabían aquel día y cuáles no.
