What is special about this verb
- Irregular in many tenses — the safest way is to learn the whole table. → The irregular verbs
- Stem change o → ue where the stem is stressed: puede, podemos. → Stem-changing verbs
- Its own stem in the past tense: pude, pudo. → Irregular preterites: tuve, hice
- Its own stem in the future and the conditional: podré.
- A special gerund form: pudiendo.

A common trap
Wrong Nosotros puedemos venir el sábado.
Right Nosotros podemos venir el sábado.
The commonest mistake is to make the change in nosotros and vosotros as well — podemos turns into puedemos, because the pattern has been learnt and is then carried through. It is exactly the other way round: those two forms are the regular ones, and the other four are the departure.
