Union, treaty, mediation — how states talk to one another.
English keeps « truce » for wars. Spanish spends la tregua on ordinary life as well. El calor no da tregua is the heat that will not let up; sin tregua means without a break, relentlessly; dame una tregua is give me a moment's peace. It still does the formal job — la tregua permitió evacuar a los heridos — and it sits one line away in this list from el alto el fuego, which is the technical term. The difference between the two is worth keeping: one is an agreement to stop for a while, the other an order to stop firing, and only the first of them can be asked for by somebody tired of the weather.
