El tren de las ocho
A journey that goes differently from the plan.
The first text in the past tense. It uses both past forms and puts them side by side: the imperfecto paints the background — it was raining, it was cold — and the indefinido carries the action. Once you can read the difference, you can write it too.
El tren salía a las ocho y Pablo llegó a la estación a las siete y media. Llovía y hacía frío. En la ventanilla había mucha cola, pero compró el billete a tiempo.
En el andén cuatro no había nadie. Pablo esperó diez minutos y entonces vio la pantalla: el tren tenía media hora de retraso. Se sentó, abrió el periódico y leyó dos páginas.
A las nueve el tren todavía no estaba. Una mujer con una maleta grande le preguntó si sabía algo. Pablo dijo que no sabía nada, pero que en la ventanilla quizá podían decir más. La mujer le dio las gracias y se fue.
Cuando por fin llegó el tren, estaba lleno. Pablo no encontró asiento y se quedó de pie hasta Zaragoza. Miraba por la ventana: campos, un río, un pueblo pequeño con una iglesia.
Llegó a Madrid a la una. Ya no llovía. Su hermana le esperaba en la salida con un paraguas que no necesitaba y con la misma pregunta de siempre: ¿Has comido algo?
