Weather and seasons in Spanish

The conversation every other conversation starts with.

The weather in Spanish belongs to hacer: hace frío, hace sol, hace buen tiempo — word for word « it makes ». English says « it is cold », with « to be » and an adjective, and that is the sentence to take apart before rebuilding it. Because the Spanish phrase is a verb with a noun, it is strengthened with mucho and never with muy: hace mucho frío. Two kinds of weather escape the pattern and have verbs of their own, llueve and nieva, and there hacer has nothing to do.
