Una noche en el hospital

Waiting, without knowing what for.

A quiet text about a long night. It lives on the imperfecto: everything that is described is in it, and only what actually happens switches to the indefinido.

La sala de espera estaba casi vacía. Había una máquina de café que no funcionaba y una televisión sin sonido. Eran las dos de la mañana.

Julia esperaba desde las once. Su padre había entrado por la tarde con dolor en el pecho y desde entonces nadie le decía nada claro.

Un hombre mayor dormía en la fila de al lado. Su mujer estaba sentada muy recta, con el bolso en las rodillas, y no cerró los ojos ni una vez.

A las tres salió una enfermera y dijo un apellido. No era el de Julia. La mujer del bolso se levantó despacio y siguió a la enfermera por el pasillo.

A las cinco vino un médico joven y se sentó al lado de Julia. Dijo que su padre estaba estable y que podía verlo diez minutos. Julia se levantó y se dio cuenta de que le temblaban las piernas.
