El examen de conducir

Second attempt, and this time it is raining.

A text about nerves and instructions. The imperatives stand out: gire, siga, pare — the usted form, because an examiner does not use tú with anyone.

Era la segunda vez que Diego hacía el examen. La primera lo suspendió en diez minutos: paró en medio de la calle y no supo por qué.

Aquel martes llovía. El examinador subió al coche sin decir buenos días y apuntó algo en un papel. Diego pensó que ya había empezado mal.

«Gire a la derecha y siga hasta el semáforo», dijo el hombre. Diego giró despacio. El limpiaparabrisas hacía ruido y las manos le sudaban.

Después de veinte minutos volvieron a la escuela. El examinador seguía escribiendo. Diego no se atrevió a preguntar nada y esperó de pie junto a la puerta.

Al final el hombre levantó la cabeza y dijo una sola palabra: «Aprobado». Diego salió a la lluvia y llamó a su madre desde la acera.
