La carta que no llegó

A form, a deadline and a letter that never arrived.

A text about dealing with the authorities, and so about the words no textbook has and without which you get nowhere in Spain. Grammatically it is the test of the subjunctive: watch every que followed by a form that does not state but asks for or doubts something.

El plazo terminaba el treinta, y dos días antes Clara todavía no tenía el certificado. Había ido dos veces al ayuntamiento y las dos veces le habían dicho lo mismo: que llegaría por correo, que no se preocupara, que era cuestión de días.

Un día antes llamó por teléfono. La señal era mala y la llamada se cortó dos veces. A la tercera le contestó una mujer que le pidió el número del documento y el prefijo de su ciudad, y que después le dijo que no encontraba nada en el sistema.

Clara le explicó que había rellenado el formulario en junio, que tenía el recibo, y que le habían dicho que llegaría en dos semanas. La mujer le contestó que era posible que la carta se hubiera perdido, y que sería mejor que fuera otra vez en persona.

Fue el treinta a las ocho y media, con el recibo, una copia del contrato y el pasaporte. Había mucha cola. A las diez le tocó el turno. El funcionario miró la pantalla, escribió algo, y le dijo que el certificado estaba hecho desde julio y que nadie lo había enviado.

Se lo imprimió y se lo dio con la firma. Clara le dio las gracias, salió a la calle y lo llevó a la empresa antes de las doce. Llegó a tiempo. La carta, dos semanas después, estaba en el buzón de un vecino del cuarto.
