Das Gedächtnis

Why remembering something clearly is not the same as remembering it correctly.

A text that corrects a common picture. It sets up the picture first (Wir stellen uns das Gedächtnis gern … vor) and then takes it apart. Watch the passive with werden for processes that happen to us rather than by us — die Erinnerung wird neu aufgebaut — and halten für, to take something for something.

Die meisten Menschen vertrauen ihren Erinnerungen mehr, als sie sollten. Wir stellen uns das Gedächtnis gern wie ein Archiv vor, in dem jedes Erlebnis unverändert liegen bleibt, bis man es braucht. Die Forschung kommt zu einem anderen Ergebnis.

Jedes Mal, wenn wir uns an etwas erinnern, wird die Erinnerung neu aufgebaut, und dabei kann sie sich verändern. Einzelheiten, die erst später hinzugekommen sind, etwa aus den Erzählungen anderer oder von Fotos, passen so gut hinein, dass wir sie für ursprünglich halten.

Besonders deutlich wird das bei Zeugen eines Unfalls. Schon die Formulierung einer Frage kann beeinflussen, woran sich jemand zu erinnern glaubt. Wer gefragt wird, wie schnell ein Auto war, als es ein anderes „rammte“, schätzt die Geschwindigkeit höher ein als jemand, der gefragt wird, wie schnell es war, als es das andere „berührte“.

Daraus folgt nicht, dass Erinnerungen wertlos wären. Aber die Gewissheit, mit der wir uns erinnern, sagt erstaunlich wenig darüber aus, ob wir richtig liegen.
