The adverbs that place something in time — and the ones that say how often it happens.
These words do more work per syllable than almost anything else in the language. They are how a sentence stops being a bare statement and becomes a report about when and how often — and they are the first slot in the German middle field, so learning them also teaches the word order. Most take no ending and never change, which makes them among the easiest vocabulary to use correctly once the meanings are clear.
