What is special about this verb

  • Irregular in many tenses — the safest way is to learn the whole table. → Strong verbs
  • A strong verb: the stem vowel changes in the simple past and the participle: wurde, geworden.

A common trap

Wrong Er wird es vergessen. (gemeint: er hat es wohl vergessen)

Right Er wird es vergessen haben.

Dropping the haben turns a guess about the past into a prediction about the future: he is going to forget it. Both sentences are correct German and they point in opposite directions in time. The participle plus auxiliary at the end is what places the guess in the past, and it cannot be left off.
