A common trap

Wrong Du musst hier nicht rauchen.

Right Du darfst hier nicht rauchen.

The wrong sentence is grammatical German and means "you are not obliged to smoke here", which is true of almost everybody and not what any sign has ever meant. This is the mistake worth drilling until it is automatic: a prohibition in German is always nicht dürfen, never nicht müssen.

nicht müssen vs. nicht dürfen
