Describing a picture and discussing a text — the vocabulary a German seminar and a museum label share.
German school and university teaching of literature has a fixed toolkit, and its terms turn up on museum labels and in newspaper reviews as well: die Handlung, die Figur, der Erzähler, das Motiv. Two of them are false friends worth flagging. Die Figur is a character in a book, not a shape or a number; and der Roman is a novel, not a romance.
