Was Durchschnitte verschweigen

An average, a percentage and the question a number does not answer.

An argument built on two examples. Notice the subjunctive II in the thought experiment — der Median bliebe dagegen nahezu unverändert — and the way the last paragraph limits its own claim with nicht … grundsätzlich before it makes it.

Kaum eine Formulierung klingt so sachlich wie „im Durchschnitt“. Sie verspricht Ordnung und Klarheit, und sie verschweigt fast immer das Entscheidende.

Ein einfaches Beispiel: Wenn in einem Raum neun Menschen mit einem bescheidenen Einkommen sitzen und ein zehnter mit einem sehr hohen hinzukommt, steigt das durchschnittliche Einkommen deutlich, obwohl sich für die neun nichts geändert hat. Der Median, also der Wert in der Mitte, bliebe dagegen nahezu unverändert.

Ähnlich leicht täuschen Angaben in Prozent. Dass sich ein Risiko „verdoppelt“, klingt alarmierend; ob es von einem auf zwei Fälle pro Million steigt oder von zehn auf zwanzig Prozent, macht jedoch einen erheblichen Unterschied. Ohne die absolute Zahl lässt sich die relative kaum beurteilen.

Das bedeutet nicht, dass Statistik grundsätzlich täuscht. Sie verdichtet, und wer verdichtet, lässt etwas weg. Wer eine Zahl liest, sollte deshalb nicht nur fragen, ob sie stimmt, sondern auch, welche Frage sie eigentlich beantwortet — und welche nicht.
