Hiking is a mainstream activity across the German-speaking Alps and uplands, and it comes with its own signage. Trails are marked with painted symbols on rocks and trees rather than with names, and a sign giving a time rather than a distance — 2 Std. — is the norm, because the climb matters more than the kilometres. Wild camping is restricted almost everywhere; a marked site or a mountain hut is the usual answer.
