Appointments and paperwork
The vocabulary of the German office counter — and the noun style that makes a form readable once you see it.
Anybody living in a German-speaking country meets this vocabulary within a fortnight, because almost everything requires an appointment and a form: registering an address, opening an account, getting a tax number. Termin, Antrag, Nachweis, Frist and Bescheid are the five words that recur. German officialdom writes in nouns built from verbs — die Beantragung, die Bearbeitung, die Vorlage. That is Nominalstil, and it looks impenetrable until you notice it is always the same handful of suffixes doing it. Find the verb inside the noun and the sentence unfolds.
